Curing Christmas blues

The thought of Christmas shopping, glazing hams and over-excited kids can take the shine off the festive season. So at this time of year I try to focus on stuff that is fun, easy and bright.

I've been surrounded by inspiration - early-summer blue skies, the delicate blue eggs from our last post, the blue borage that creates the most delicious honey available from The Honey Collection  and finally a selection of blue buttons...

 

Personalised handmade key rings make lovely presents - especially if you need to pop them in the post - they're small and travel well.

Yesterday was a red letter day. The rain was driving in sideways and it was the perfect time to make myself sit still and finish sewing by hand the binding of my Blue Silk Quilt which I blogged about here.

And then when I went to collect the post from our post box 2 kms from our house along a metal (gravel, unfinished) road, there was treasure inside - two handknitted cushion covers made by my fabulous Mother and sent with love to the other side of the world. Smiles all round!

                                   

I love the cabling and I especially love the detail of the buttons. Just right for huddling up with on a cold and rainy day - thanks Mum! 

                                       

Then I just had to look out some vintage buttons for inspiration.........

Long Weekend

All our plans for the long weekend had to be shelved at the last minute as one by one we all got the dreaded lurgy. The upside to this was a big blank canvas for hanging about together and getting stuff done. I finally picked up a Blue silk quilt which has been waiting for some hand-stitch quilting and I got a fair amount done, it is such an easy thing to pick up and put down. There is something therapeutic about small handstitches on a big scale, meditation for the mind of a sort I suppose. I am using up some paper tape left over from our plaster board venture last year, it works a treat for marking out the straight lines for sewing.
